In September 2009, The New York Times published an article entitled "Health Concerns over Popular Contraceptives." The article highlights concerns over Bayer Pharmaceuticals oral contraceptive Yaz® or Yasmin®, manufactured by Barr Laboratories. Recent studies show that use of the drug may place women at a higher risk for blood clots, strokes, and other health problems. The component of Yaz that may make it dangerous is the type of progesterone it contains. This progesterone is called drospirenone, and it is so new it only can be found in Yaz®. Drospirenone may cause levels of potassium in the body to reach high levels, and for someone who already has cardiovascular or kidney problems, this can cause serious problems. In August 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Bayer a warning citation for not following proper procedures at a plant that makes the hormones ingredients. Further investigation is pending.
